Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall, Roots & Shoots inspires young people to identify challenges in their communities and take action to create a better world for people, animals, and the environment. Our program leads student groups in planning and carrying out service projects that make a positive impact on the Anacostia Watershed and River.
Habitat Restoration: Students remove debris and clear invasive plant species from wetlands to restore natural habitats along the Anacostia River—becoming true changemakers in the process.
Water Quality Testing: Participants test the chemical, physical, and biological health of the Anacostia River and Little Patuxent River to compare the conditions of polluted versus clean waterways and better understand the importance of environmental stewardship.
Together, these projects empower youth to learn, lead, and make tangible improvements in their local ecosystems.
